The perfect Travelers Hobby
One Benefit of Snorkeling is the fact that little equipment is required, all you need is a mask, snorkel, pair of “Reef Shoes.” or sox, fins, and a lightweight inflatable life preserver, you can fit this stuff easily into your carry on luggage with minimal space consumption (I usually check my Fins on with my luggage). Fins are not always required and sometimes get in your way. Like in Xcalak at the Coral Garden Inn where we stay, we wade out quite a ways on sand untill we start to find Coral Heads at about Waist deep. Then we just put our faces in the water and lay flat watching the brightly colored fish swim about. Also, one can hear the waves crashing on the barrier reef fifty yards or so further out and if they feel more adventuresome can swim out to it. For that I would recommend taking fins.
